BRMS Alumni is a finalist in NJMEA Competition!Gavin Tomasco is a finalist in the NJMEA Young Composition Competition. I am very proud that he wrote his first piece for us at BRMS for our Woodwind Honors Ensemble. It was wonderful. We are all so proud of him! Here is what he said about his current piece and a link to hear it. We wish you the best of luck and are so proud of you! "Dawn" is the sixth movement of the choral song cycle Canticum Canticorum. Inspired by a multitude of choral influences, the most significant being Ola Gjeilo, this cycle uses biblical Latin texts from the book Song of Songs, which itself has eight chapters, each mapped to a movement of the cycle. This text speaks of two passionate lovers, and each movement explores a facet of their relationship. "Dawn" draws on the tenth verse of chapter six of Song of Songs (the ninth verse in the Latin text), in which a chorus of observing onlookers are in awe of the beauty of the woman, comparing her to the celestial: the dawn, moon, sun, and stars. As part of the larger song cycle, this movement incorporates motivic elements representing gold (earlier appearing in movements 1 and 5) and beauty (from 1, 2, and 7). A harp accompaniment is used rather than the customary piano to mimic the historical instruments prevalent in biblical times. This piece is being considered as a finalist in the vocal category of the NJMEA Young Composers Competition, with the award ceremony taking place on January 31st, 2021.
Dr. Piascik is proud to announce that he has finished the new composition class for the "Music Level System." This class will focus on improving your songwriting skills as you are guided to write your own music. You will have handouts in the "Level Packets" and also need to use the new website, brmssongwriting.weebly.com, to get your assignments and listen to the music referenced in the packets. Everyone will start on Lesson 1, even if you are on Level 12, and you can move faster through the class if you want to. Please see Dr. Piascik for more information. As usual, please let Dr. Piascik know of any concerns or ways we can make the class better as we all proceed. Have a wonderful rest of summer and see you all soon! Jupiter is holding a competition for 6-12 grade student composers. All you have to do is compose a 16 measure melody and submit the form. If your melody is selected as the best one, then a full length band piece will be written using your melody and performed in Nashville. The winner will also get to stay in the Opryland Hotel for two nights. If you are willing to write the melody and submit, I will give you some bonus points for your extra time and effort. How cool would it be to have some BRMS composers writing beautiful melodies for the judges to hear? The deadline is September 30, 2015 at 11:59pm. You can learn more about how to compose a great melody in the first few lessons of my composition class. Please also ask me for advice if you are confused. Here is the link to the website for more information Good luck and have fun! After experimenting with many methods, and programs, to help the students learn how to compose music, Dr. Piascik decided to write a new class in 2015. Not only will the students will be able to learn how to compose beautiful music, but they can also work on their compositions, at their own pace, using many different programs, and on their own computers. Most composition classes teach you mainly on the piano. This class will focus on teaching you how to compose through the process of songwriting. You will be guided along the journey of writing your own song! Which will include lyrics, music, orchestration, and publishing! This class will also introduce you to many cool programs online and at school to help you produce great music! Part of having fun with music is composing your own beautiful music and lyrics. What will we compose today? Thanks to a generous grant from the Chester Education Foundation and Dr. Piascik working all summer to create a class, BRMS will have an Electronic Music Workstation for the band members. The music programs included are the top used in the music industry- Logic Pro X and Ableton Live 9.
Dr. Piascik has written an online class that the students can progress through as they watch videos before school and do the assignments. We all really look forward to the first BRMS dance hit! Please see Dr. Piascik if you are interested in taking the course. ...Here comes the drop Boom!!! Great Compositions are being composed by our students!I have been trying to find a way to inspire and educate the students on how to compose music of their own. Time with the students is always valuable and composition keeps slipping through the cracks. 2012 marked the year that I finally found a great online program called "Inside Music" that helps the students learn how to compose with a video of the lesson and then assignments to work on. The great thing is that the students can do their work on any computer and at their own pace. They can go as fast or slow as they want. The program also includes a notational program for them to compose their pieces. It looks just like a real piece of music! They can also listen to their work and edit as they feel their creativity leads them.
I have been so amazed at the quality of all the compositions by the students. But today, as I was checking the assignments that have been submitted (over the internet), I was speechless as I heard a composition by Jeremy Rochelle, a 6th grader. He obviously spent many hours working on his creation and takes great pride in his work. I am honored that he has agreed to let me share his composition with you all, however the link did not work. I will see if I can fix it later. |
